MUSE Palliative Care

 

MUSE Palliative Care is a hands on point of care ultrasound course for clinicians providing palliative care.  We offer an exceptional ratio of one instructor for two participants. You will improve your ultrasound skills through plenty of image generation and scanning time. No prior experience in point of care ultrasound is required.

CME credits: 27 Mainpro+® credits from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Course overview:

  • Ascites/paracentesis: Identifying abdominal free fluid in the right/left upper quadrant and pelvic space. Introduction to paracentesis using phantom model.

  • Pleural effusion/thoracentesis: Identify pleural effusions. Introduction to thoracentesis using phantom model.

  • Cardiac: Identifying pericardial effusion. Scanning normal cardiac anatomy and global cardiac activity. Scanning inferior vena cava for volume assessment. Scanning the right ventricle for signs of strain.

  • DVT lower extremity: Introduction to compression ultrasound of the lower extremity veins to identify deep vein thrombosis.

  • Soft Tissue: ultrasonographic signs to differentiate abscess from cellulitis 

Our teaching faculty have extensive expertise in teaching point of care ultrasound and are all CPoCUS IP certified. Their experience spans practicing and teaching ultrasound in rural and urban ERs, ICUs, medical wards, office-based clinics as well as internationally in low income countries.
